1. US shuts down Pakistan's Habib Bank:

In another jolt to Pakistan, the US has shut down the country's largest lender Habib Bank's operations in New York and slapped a fine of $225 million for its failure to comply with laws aimed to combat money laundering, terrorist financing and other illicit financial transactions. T he action against the Karachi-based Habib Bank comes days after US president Donald Trump said Pakistan provided safe havens to terrorists attacking US and Afghan troops. US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had also warned Pakistan that it could lose its status as a 'major US ally' and military aid suspended if it continued to back terror groups.



2. India, Japan JV to set up LNG import terminal in Sri Lanka:
An agreement has been reached between the governments of India, Sri Lanka and Japan to set up the LNG terminal as a 50:50 joint venture by Petronet and a Japanese company. India and Japan will join hands to set up a $ 250 million LNG import terminal in Sri Lanka, the first collaboration between the two to counter China’s growing influence in the Island nation. Petronet LNG Ltd, India’s biggest gas importer, last year proposed to set up an up to 2 million tonne (MT) liquefied natural gas (LNG) import facility on the coast of Sri Lanka to meet its energy needs.

3. Mid-day meal mobile app launched in Punjab:



This technological advancement would help save the precious time of the teachers which would be devoted to the academic affairs, said Punjab education minister Aruna Chaudhary. Punjab education minister Aruna Chaudhary on Thursday launched a mid-day meal (MDM) mobile app to manage data pertaining to the scheme, aimed at improving nutritional status of school-going children. Giving details, the minister said the department of school education, Punjab, has developed the software to manage the MDM-related data.

4. Hockey India’s appointment of Sjoerd Marijne as men’s coach defies logic:

Hockey India have pulled off a surprise and appointed Dutchman Sjoerd Marijne, the head of the women’s team, as coach of the men’s hockey team after Roelant Oltmans was dismissed from the post. Harendra Singh will take over as the women’s team’s high performance specialist coach.

5. Viveck Goenka elected PTI chairman, N Ravi deputy chairman:

The election took place at a meeting of the board of directors following the company’s 69th annual general meeting. Goenka, who was earlier the vice-chairman, will succeed Riyad Mathew of the Malayala Manorama group.
